I expect we're all familiar with this, but just in case I think it's worth mentioning that the Chater pedal shown above is intended for use with steel cranks - it has a short thread.
Ali cranks are thicker and so need a longer threaded pedal spindle for it to be flush with the back of the crank. However this is not just a matter of neatness - it's not that rare for cranks to break, which can lead to painful injury!
