Pauls Thumbies

  • Does anyone have experience of using the Pauls Thumbies, the widget that turns bar end shifters into thumb shifters? Do i need to get 10 speed specific thumb shifters, or will 9 spd ones do?

  • I have not used them but from what I understand you just pick the barend shifter that matches the rest of your drive chain.

  • I have had a few of them, here is my current one (below), I modified it to death in the interests of weight weenieism and beautification as they are a little clunky looking for me with the rubber covers and big chunky arms (like my 5th wife 'Debs')

A 9 speed shifter will be indexed for 9 speed so you can't use them (easily) on a 10 speed block - but you can twist the top ring thingy to switch off the SIS indexing so it becomes a friction shifter which allows you to use it on any block pitch you like (although you loose the luxury of indexing)

Hope all that makes sense !

  • you know its a sunday when tynan gets all creative on yo ass.....

  • Sweet tynan.so using it un-indexed will mean I can use shimano with campag

That's what my 5th wife 'Debs' said.

I weeped as the fork lift truck lowered her into a well earned grave, good god that woman could put the pints away.

What is this devil talk !?

Basically switching it out of SIS (indexed) means it's a friction shifter, so you can pull as little or as much cable as you like - which means you can get the chain to sit wherever you like -**assuming the throw of the shifter reaches both ends of your needed range, which I am pretty sure it would as when a group set steps up a cog (7 to 8 . . . 8 to 9 . . . 9 to 10 etc) they reduce the pitch rather than expand the physical range (depth) of the cassette.

    Ye get me' ?

See confirmation, from Little Davey Murtle.

I will give you 5 rep points if you can name the green stripy bloke.

  • Does anyone other than Paul make these things?

Apart from just getting old school thumb shifters, are there any other cheap ways to convert barend shifters to thumb shifters?

    Cheers.

  • I have a set of the paul ones, BNIB, with some 8 speed Ultegra shifters, also BNIB, if you would like them?

  • Don't spose this awesome dredge showing no reply to that means you still got them?

  • I might have a set, will have to check. I had a set of Paul thumbies and a set of Forge ones too, can't remember which are here in the uk. I'm half asleep now after a night shift so likely to forget to check but if you pm me this evening I'll have a dig through for you. Do you need the shifters too?

    Adam

  • Thanks! No, I already have 8sp bar-end shifters I'd like to use on them.

  • Did you sort this?

  • Hi mate, yep the Forge ones are good, why, are you shifting some?
