I've done it before with a hammer and screwdriver but this is full carbon steerer and crown, I won't be going near it with a hammer
If the race is flush with the crown, the tool might struggle to get started.
Tap a razor/Stanley blade in and work it around: should give the tool enough of a grip to get going.
Its got a gap, I tried with a kitchen knife but snapped the knife. Plus I still need the tool.
