  • It's fucking shit. I watched it bounce off.

  • Im curious how the rear caliper attaches to the frame? Looks lovely though. Can you get a close up of the welds?

    This is from their website:

    Native flat-mount, Ti thru-axle drops :)

With the option for rack and fender mounts because I personally think that bikes with those things tend to adapt and evolve to use more (in part because they're standard and so it's easy to find ways to use them - I'll probably get one of the Ti racks as a way to strap a small tent onto the back and still have room for a saddle bag).

  • Ti not recommended for stem bolts, seats posts and racks. I forgot why but these will brake.

  • Think he referring to just the bolts.

  • Yes I was talking about getting exactly this rack with Mark at SBC and he explained.

  • Oh, I'm not quite there with needing ti bolts everywhere. I would use whatever came in the mounting pack for the rack, probably bog standard steel ones.

  • Yes Angel at Condor and broken seatpost in situ Mc Donald's Scarborough last year.

  • Will update later how he advised against the rack but while it might sound nice ti is more a material not ideal for racks and what they have to do. And it wasn't that you can't weld them touring around the world.

  • Cool, well do let me know.

I am not thinking of the Tubus Airy, that was just the first found through a quick google, but it looks too narrow on top to actually be of interest. I am less likely to be using panniers, and only request the mount points so that I could have a small platform to strap a tent to.

But in general, I hadn't seen arguments against ti racks even though I haven't yet looked into exactly which rack I might get in the future.

Edit: Another quick google... probably the Lynskey Nomad. Looks wide enough on top, and comes with bottle openers. What more could you want in a rack?

  • Ti not recommended for stem bolts, seats posts and racks

Having read more widely... and because I was curious, not because I am intending to go round swapping bolts... it is aluminium that cannot be used for stem bolts, seat post bolts and anything that bears a heavy load.

Titanium can be used absolutely anywhere and the only exception are pivot bolts on full suspension frames which specify a high-tensile steel (not applicable to almost every bike on LFGSS).

Some stats on weights and torques (includes a mention of the "don't use Al on stems and seat posts": http://weightweenies.starbike.com/articles.php?ID=16

All irrelevant as I like standard steel bolts... but TIL, so that's cool.

  • Thanks for clearing up the BS.

  • Ti bolts are fine, just make sure you get decent quality ones as they're more prone to rounding off/snapping than steel bolts.

  • I've snapped genuine 3T Ti stem bolt whilst using a torque wrench at below maximum torque, never snapped a steel one.

  • Same. They seem fairly temperamental with age..

  • I've observed that the more you tighten the bolt the fatter the "stem" of the mushroom shape becomes, and of course the "cap" is closer into the tube, so I'd say there's a good amount of scope for tuning how tightly they hold the bottle.

  • I found the perfect bottle cage: http://www.kingcage.com/index.php?products=yes

The titanium one of course ;)

  • That cage is grim. Looks like a freebie attached to MBUK issue 4.

  • Thanks.

That's exactly the look I was going for.

  • MBUK

That's exactly the look I was going for.

Time to commission a Mint Sauce headbadge, to match your avatar...

  • Nailed it REAL good :-)

  • Yes, that what fabric recommend if the bottle wasn't fitted tightly.

It never once fell off during the Cobble Monster, others however provide great entertainment with their bottle swiftly ejecting in Wapping (one managed to ejected themselves from their bike with aplomb).

  • That cage is grim. Looks like a freebie attached to MBUK issue 4.

You are 100% wrong on this, it's a simple, classic design- in stark contrast to the aesthetic horror story that is (for e.g.) an Elite or Arundel cage.

  • On to the most important talk

    What cages?
