• I didn't know where in the world I could find someone to help me do this so I thought a bicycle based forum would be the best choice. Obviously.

I work in a world of non-tech people and I have to organise them.
I thought having a visual, drag-and-drop thing would help me, but I don't even know the technical terms for this, and I don't have the slightest clue which would be the most appropriate software to do it on - I am more than happy using MS Office software, and can learn others, and I'm doing this on PCs and iPads. I have never crossed into the world of programming.
    So maybe Access?
Anyway, here's what Im trying to acheive:

  • On each new day I want to be able to drag and drop any "Crew x" into any "team" bubble, and have any number in each bubble.
Is this deceptively difficult or ridiculously easy?
Thanks for any help, you're my only hope.

  • A spreadsheet with the teams as column headings wouldn't suffice?

  • 4 magnetic boards and a magnet name tag for each worker. Label boards Team 1, Team 2 etc.

  • Not really. That's what I currently do; I'm trying to achieve a visual aid that I can use on a portable device, something that I and a couple of workmates can adjust as we discuss our plans.
Even though it seems like a simplistic idea it would be unbelievably useful.
    Thanks though

  • I'll do that if you carry it around for me all day!

  • ^ This basically is what I thought before I scrolled down to see it already suggested.

But then maybe there's a reason why you don't want to use a whiteboard system. In which case, I'd just go with a shared Outlook calendar. On each day, have four 8:00 to 8:30 meetings, one for each team. In each meeting you set the meeting title as Team 1, Team 2 etc. Then in the body text of the meeting you Type in which Crew is in that team. You can also add in any notes and comments relating to the tasks you need them to achieve etc. Use colour categorisation for the meetings to enable quick identification.

The downside to this is that it is slightly more labourious than a drag and drop method. However, it is easy and anyone can do it so requires little training and anyone else can take over when you're off work with the shits or lounging on a sunny beach with the little shits. Also has the benefit of using a piece of software that you're already using which is usually very stable.

  • Yeah, I suppose I am ultimately looking at a whiteboard.... but one that is on an iPad/phone/laptop screen.
Then I can share, edit and archive each days layout. And I can carry it around all day long on a bike or in a van. Obviously my content isn't quite a simplistic as that in my sketch.
Currently I use a wad of paper and it works, but it doesn't have any of the aforementioned advantages that using a tablet offers; and this, after all, is the 21st century!

  • Actually the answer is now bloody obvious to me.
Just goes to show that all you need is to tell your problem to someone and the mental block can disappear.
