Regarding using a clean sound with pedals - this is what I would do. I usually will run my signal via my pedals, and into a completely flat-EQ clean sound. Then, if I want filth, turn the gain up on the clean channel, until I get the bite that I want, and roll the master volume down to a suitable level, and EQ/Touch up as necessary.
Do you guys use a clean sound into your pedals?
I can't do it, I need some raunch in the amp otherwise it sounds shit to me... I know this isn't the way you're supposed to do it but it's the only way I feel comfortable playing... My clean sound is a Fender Twin with the volume on 10 and the master volume on about 4 (more like 2-3 for indoor levels), same deal on my AC15... On the Solton I never play on anything lower than 7-8 but mostly all the way up to 10... Pretty much filthy, but cleans up OK when you roll a bit off the guitar... And I can always play a bit lighter...
I don't get people using amps that sound so great when you push the tubes but only use them in piddly-widdly mode, what's the point?
