  • 2 set out on loop 5 at Barkley...

  • might also be worth checking fetcheveryone.com and clicking on the racefinder there. It is the best place I have found for finding races, unless you buy Athletics Weekly and look in the back of that.

Final long run done of marathon training. 24 hours later than it should have been but hopefully that won't affect things too much. Tried to pick up the last five miles but could only manage three. Definitely the hottest run I have had so far.

  • Good work!

This week I've officially declared myself a spectator for VMLM. Having given up on the racing idea a few weeks ago I thought I might use my place to help out MsPub with pace-making, but this doesn't really chime with erring on the side of caution for achilles recovery. (Especially as she's so quick!) The achilles feels pretty normal now but I'm also enjoying cycling in this proper Spring weather, so return to running will be ultra-conservative and geared towards being competitive again over the Summer.

  • Anyone got any experience with tibial stress fractures? Off to the quack in a minute to get it looked at.
Last real run was 9th march and what felt like a dull shin pain turned very spikey feeling. I rested it for a fortnight ran 5k and it came back worse.
I can ride a bike without pain, but I can't walk more than 300metres.
So...how long do these take to fix?

  • John has finished in 59:30. Gary still out there...25 minutes to go.

  • Gary Robbins seems like a really top bloke, fingers crossed...

  • Looks like that's time.

  • Unverified reports from Twitter of Gary arriving at the gate 6 seconds after the cut-off, from the wrong direction and having run 3 miles extra after getting lost in fog.

If you can watch this without welling up you're tougher than I am.

  • Was following bm100 on twitter the last hour. Crazy stuff.

It'll be a long year dwelling on that finish for Gary, hope he can get some closure in 2018.

  • tibial stress fracture

Yep, had one of those. Where is it on the shin? Front or inside of the shin bone? How high above the ankle?

When I went to the doctor I got referred for an X-ray initially. Usually this won't show much so it's best to get an MRI if you can.

It's fine to cycle or do other cross training if there's no pain. Avoid running. I was out for about 6 weeks.

  • Front of shin about 10cm up
X-ray results on Thursday reckon mri or bone scan will follow.
What kind of treatment did you have?

  • last 800s session done, have a bit of a cold so nearly bailed but training buddies were there so did it, and was surprisingly easy, feel like things are coming together, which i guess is a sign that I've got the peaking thing about ride, hopefully riding a wave of confidence and good performances in to the doubt of the taper!

  • No real treatment - I just waited for it to heal. That's all you can do with a stress fracture really.

Sounds like it might hopefully not be one in your case though - maybe it's shin splints? In my experience of a tibia stress fracture, the pain was felt on the outside of the shin. I hear shin splints normally affect the front of the bone.

  • My musings from Saturdays Glasgow to Edinburgh ultra.

Being as I survived g2e unscathed and a friend has broken a toe and had to pull out of the Highland Fling relay team. I get to run a bit of it afterall
    😀 for me
    😢for her

  • Sounds like a well paced run, Chapeau.

  • Entry process has been simplified:

Not £1.60 tho, so I'm out. Going to volunteer as a Marshall / helper if they need any.

P.s. also happy to volunteer as support crew for any forumengers who might be entering

  • that looks utterly crackers.

I think i'll stick to the road relays tomorrow.

  • Could this be the UK equivalent of Barkley!

Mark Cobain had the ingenious idea of The Hill Ultra. 160 miles, consisting of 55 reps up n down Shining Tor... 54 oportunities to bail out.

  • Sounds fun! He's also behind the chained ultra, and in conjunction Escape from Meriden there's a chained option there this year.

  • road relays tomorrow

    Have fun!

  • Sdw50 today.
12weeks training from scratch including managing a dicky ankle.

Felt strong for the first half.
The third quarter was purgatory and I gave up hope of going under 9hrs - revised my goals to enjoy it and aim for an optimistic 10hrs.
Got a wriggle on in final quarter once I realised I was still in with a sniff of 9hrs... Hurt like hell.

Final time 8:51ish according to the garmin. Not sure about official time.

  • I think the third quarter is the worst on long runs 😣

Well done on comfortably getting under your target time.

  • Lol, yeah 3rd quarter is always the worst no matter what the distance.

When I used to row I used to drill into all my crews to make a big move in the 3rd quarter. Most crews will make a big push at half way (1000m) so I used to get my crews to have a big technical focus to hang with them and then as soon as their speed began to drop back to normal we'd counter with our own big push and knock a length out of them. It's hard to psychologically come back from that in the 3rd quarter.
