I popped into cycle surgery on the way home and tried a selection of kask and giro helmets on. I seem to be at the top end of a medium in both, and weirdly they all seemed to fit OK. I don't know what's happened since I last tried a protone, but I wouldn't say no now (for the right price). The Giro Synthe was nice too, but again very pricey...
