  • Just changed from Stanton 500 to AT 95E after years of Stanton devotion. Despite the lower output from the AT I can't really enjoy the 500's now, maybe mine are just a bit knackered but the AT kicks them in the balls.

  • Thank you for this advice, which pretty much confirms what I suspected. Charity shop it will be.

  • Charity prob the best course of action, but maybe if there's only 30 of em, check Discogs quickly in case you're sitting on any other gems. I find it's quickest if you just type the cat number into the search bar

  • Which mono Stones LP? The first one? Belter of an LP in mono, that...

  • Rolling Stones 2, Aftermath and Out of Our Heads.

  • Ooh, I still need a copy of No.2... Are they really shagged?

I'd take all of them if they were playable and you were willing to post to Oz...

  • Is 2 the one with suzie q? I get those early lps mixed up.

  • That's the one!

  • I will play them again today and let you know!

  • Looks fine to me! 🙂

  • I can't play them right now as Luddlet #2 is listening to Ciccone Youth over his breakfast.

  • Clever lad...

  • Well, I have now got into the groove with some warm soapy water and Mick and Keef are sounding brilliant on my old Dual tt.

  • You won't wanna get rid of them now! 🙂

  • Old British pressings are very forgiving, especially mono... I've got a few nasty looking LPs that play great, almost worthless but still fantastic sounding!

  • I fear you're right there Joe - but there are many other LPs to get shot of. Son of Morris On, Weather Report, stuff that won't sound good even when clean.

  • My favourite way to clean vinyl is with a bar of soap (old fashioned, unperfumed stuff) and cold water... Get as much dust off as you can, wet the record under the tap (being careful to get as little water as possible on the label) then get a bit of soap on your wet index finger and gently rub the record in the direction of the grooves with the pad of your finger... Firm pressure works best, get some suds going... Once you've finished that side get the cold tap going really hard and rinse the vinyl, this should dislodge a lot of crap from the groove...

Do the other side then gently wipe with a clean, lint free cloth and leave in the washing rack to dry... I've brought loads of records back from the dead like this, the difference in sound is staggering...

  • Ha! Well if you decide to part with it please let me know, I'd be interested... I'm only missing that one and Satanic Majesties, which I fear I'll never own now... I passed on so many lovely hologram copies of that back in the 80s (for £2 in the basement of Record & Tape Exchange) waiting for the perfect copy and wound up without one! Same goes for No.2, silly me...

  • Ive had really good results from the PVA glue method. Not for the feint hearted, but I have some Bollywood on the shelves that was eggs and bacon, and is now pretty listenable.

Just only use the kids, non toxic, water based stuff!

  • Just been trying out some ultrasonic cleaning on 7" stuff (only size that will fit in the machine I have. Turning by hand just to see if it's any good. Not a silver bullet by any means but useful to clean new stuff without scratching it. Probably needs more time than I'm prepared to give it.

  • Anyone know if there are any Steely Dan vinyl remaster or reissues out there? Having a hard time Dan vinyl locally

  • Should be millions of dan on discogs. Reissues would be more expensive than OGs generally, for stuff like Steely Dan.

  • Don't do it!

An old mate of mine worked on a tour with them back in the 70s, one of her jobs was to go into the chemist and buy the stuff they'd cook down to make smack on the tour bus...

  • If you're having trouble finding them in the wild, you might have to resort to Discogs.

There are some excellent pressings though - I found a MoFi Aja recently (although I hear the Cisco pressing is the one to get.)

If you go onto the Steve Hoffman forums, there's usually good discussions on the quality of various repressings. (A quick check is to see what costs the most on Discogs. If it's not a first pressing, it's probably a really good remaster.)

  • cheers!
