General Disc Radness (formerly disc wheel valuation thread)

Its a tri-spoke alright of the plastic variety, they have strange characteristics on the bike. Slow to get going, can creak a little at low speed if you are heavy like me. Apparently inside of the spokes theres a round alloy rod although ive never seen the inside of a broken wheel to confirm this. They do make a nice noise as they pass through the forks and the bearings on mine seemed to be very good. Mines a tub and seems best matched to a 19-20mm wide profile. Convinced it outperforms my mavic 3g - less affected by wind.

Got one of these in the post yesterday and it works - kind of, in that I can get it on and off. What's not so good about it compared to the Zipp is it doesn't give as accurate a pressure reading which is annoying.

yes it starts to blow off when the pressure gets high so it requires holding on, one armed track pumping up to 140PSI+ is a good core workout, well one side anyway, but it probably makes more sense to make a cork wedge to keep it in place.

I did it one-armed, and probably got it up to about 100 psi (boast post?) but it was showing 20 on the gauge.

strange as mine reads ok. Maybe your valve core or the way the adapter fits your pump is to blame?

It might be the latter as the Zipp adaptor which didn't fit on the wheel fit really nicely on the pump and gave an accurate reading.

Can anyone ID this disc? Thought it looked a bit like a Comete, but I'm not sure.

Thats a Zipp 950, looks repaired.

They were crazy bargains. Kinda gutted I'm so skint at the moment, they were sorely tempting.

In other news, last week I had a partial refund on the cracked Polish/Russian disc wheel pair, the super heavy ones. Since I had nothing to lose, ripped off the cracked plastic covering. Housed inside was a four-spoke (like my one I bought on-here), but with loads of epoxy resin/glass fibre and expandable foam in the gaps. Highly likely indestructible, though I'd love to remove all the shit and make them fourspoke again.

Tapped around the resin with a hammer, it laughed at me. Having destroyed the cover to remove it, the fumes were potent for days even for an ancient wheel.

Rear still has the covers intact, and the extra kilos. This is the front, which would be great to 'restore'.

What makes you think it's been repaired?

I'll be taking a look at it in person soon so will be able to check out any possible damage...

The big elliptical carbon patch? Yellowing around the edge of it suggests it's been epoxied on/isn't just a carbon-effect decal.

There's one on each side though - so either a repair of something that went right the way through/damaged both sides or just something that the owner thought looked cool?

Yea that's what I was thinking. I used shoe glue (contact adhesive) to stick the pieces of the cover back on, it's not flush or pretty but stopped the solvent smell a little. Suppose it could be stickerbombed to the same effect.

The wheel alone weighs as much as a modern full build. Wouldn't mind shaving off one or two kg.

Hmm, thought all 900 were dimpled and as Lukas and Tom said, this carbon patch looks like something went straight trough there, but it doesn't look too bad ,and theres no mark of original decal. Zipp 950 had decals under the vinyl (not sticker), so maybe this is indeed 900. Confused now.

I have what I believe to be is an Alesa disc wheel for sale. It is in good condition, the braking track looks pretty much untouched, there is a groove on one side but that does not appear to have come from braking (looks like it was a manufacturing process).

It is about 1.5 to 2mm out of true at one point (can send a video clip if needed - it is pretty much the same as every other disc I have seen).
