• Would avoid the 1.6 petrol, it was alright in the 80s, I had same lump in a 1999 polo wagon with 100hp variant. Drank fuel, ran very well, lots of torque, drove like a 2.0 displacement motor but no upper mid/top end. Also drank fuel.
    Since 2000 that same motor is in a lot of octavia, leon and a3 with different injection/ecu setups. It's reliable if even vaguely serviced right, but if not top end goes noisy and then uses even more fuel.
    Best I ever got out of that polo (fabia is same size car) was 38mpg and that was proper careful 58mph windows up cruising. Reliable though! 5 years out of that thing with nothing out of the ordinary

    The 1.4 100 or whatever the higher output version might be on paper slower than the 1.6 but better in real world, makes a resnoble noise and can rev out fine.
