I got 99 problems but my WiFi ain't one

No WiFi thread so...

Our Virgin Media router is in the living room and most WiFi is consumed there I'd say, but getting weaker signals in the kitchen/bedroom probably due to the massively thick brick walls. would one of these sort it out?

if so, do you have to connect to that if you move rooms or do you still connect to your base router? any other suggestions?

Get the second or third one as they are the most recent 'AC' wifi protocol.

Usually there will be an option when setting up to clone your router's existing WiFi network automatically, then the ID and password will be the same for all wireless access points, and any modern device will just connect to the best one as you move around.

(It can be useful to use different IDs when troubleshooting coverage though.)

Also, double check that your main router is AC and transmitting on both 2.4GHz (slower, longer range) and 5GHz (faster, shorter range, blocked by walls).

thanks, I'm using a Virgin Media Superhub (Netgear VMDG480). Should I get that replaced?

Looks like that is previous generation wireless N rather than AC. Probably a good idea to consider replacing that first. I don't actually know about ISP provided routers, do you have to pay for upgrade to a newer one?

I can pick up my wifi about 100 metres from my house now.

I stuck a Netfear range extender in the kitchen. Works a treat.

Need help on this one as well, have BT infinity and a smart hub, and GF is moving in, one of her big things is that the wifi signal drops off in the back of my flat (thick concrete walls) and so need to extend the signal.

I fitted 3 BT Extenders, they worked some of the time and were hopeless most of the time. My solution was cheap as chips buying a couple of BT Hub 5s and making them repeaters. I have one fitted in the attic at the opposite side of the house from the main router and am now getting a speed of 50Mbps where before I was getting 2Mbps. My lad uses some things that you plug into the electric sockets that use the house wiring. Seem to work well as he spends hours playing DOTA :)

I use them. Loads of options on the market and really simple to set up. Mine (TP-Link) also work as wifi extenders.

the other option is to pull up the carpet and run two ethernet cables to the rooms where the wifi is weakest and plug in an extender..

No need, you can get extenders which utilise the mains wiring in your house as per my last post.

Yeah appreciate that - as long as your flat isn't wired up in a convoluted way then it'll work. I bought through Argos for this reason as they have a great returns policy - just don't chuck away the packaging!

Kinda - You can also get ones where the extender port (which you can connect up to your computer) also transmits a WiFi signal.
I think I've got this one (but with 2 extenders, not the 1) but you might want to look at models which can handle more bandwidth if you're on fibre optic.
