  • Not sure if this will work given the FT's paywall;

    https://www.ft.com/content/89d601b0-148c-11e7-80f4-13e067d5072c

The sentence "Britain is giving away the substance of power for the mirage of sovereignty." is a killer.

  • "In the words of a veteran Eurocrat — an Anglophile who wants an amicable outcome — the EU “holds all the cards across all the dossiers”. "

  • The sentence "Britain is giving away the substance of power for the mirage of sovereignty." is a killer.

Seeing as weakening states is precisely the aim of those driving the Brexit agenda, with them hoping that they will fall like dominoes, the next big test being France, that's hardly surprising. We may talk of the EU as being strong and stable today, but that would all change if Le Pen was elected. Divide and rule--perversely and paradoxically, in this case the dividers and rulers are not the uniters and rulers.

    (Can't see the article.)

  • Doesn't work, either, but don't worry, I'm sure you've pulled out the key quotes.

  • ^^ that one works for me

  • Sounds like the Gibraltesers will be saying hola to their new Spanish overlords soon.

  • I think this is actually a cunning plan - the 1M or so British migrants (AKA expats) who are currently in Spain can make their way to Gibralter (there's probably a bus) ahead of it becoming a part of Spain again, that way they get en-Spanished, and can once again enjoy things like healthcare, freedom of movement etc, and we don't have to take ~700 leathery sexpests back into the UK.

  • Spain has already said they want to guarantee UK migrants rights.

The irony of Gibraltar possibly being lost to the UK due to Brexit after fighting a war for it... ah well.

  • Some real gems in there..

  • What's the fucking obsession with the death penalty?!
Depressing list though after a few it gets harder to tell which are piss takes.

  • always suspected that military worship is a latent homosexuality signifier. not that there's anything wrong with that.

  • Extreme in out group thinking coupled with lack of empathy?

Immigrants is an out group, as a bonus "no nhs for them, kick them out at the slightest..."
Then easy enough to get to criminals as an out group, well just kill em

Anyways if you want a long read

[Btw the death penalty exists in some tribal societies, but again, not in all. Some have milder punishments for murder, some exclude the member from society by pretending their are dead which is effectively death by isolation, but i am not sure any research exists for those]

  • Eeew that ending... [glad i've eaten] :):)

  • That's brilliant!

  • What on earth could have made them think aslyum seekers were bad?

  • The hypocrisy knows no bounds.

  • how does spanish ownership of melila and ceuta differ to british ownership of gibraltar
what are the backgrounds to these small territories and their new overlords

how can spain be so two faced about wanting gibraltar back whilst still holding their two mini territories

the uk should start pushing for catalonian independence during the brexit negotiations

  • Meanwhile we have serious politicians making thinly veiled threats of military action towards Spain over Gibraltar. Have these lost their minds?

It does make we wonder what would happen if two members of NATO started fighting each other though. I doubt that's laid out in the articles of membership.

  • it's an entirely conscious editorial choice. this way, their fuckwitted readers get to puff themselves up with a sense of righteous indignation whilst simultaneously diminishing their responsibility for fostering an environment where this sort of behaviour is becoming normal.

    cha ching.

  • The Spanish argue they've controlled Ceuta and Melilla since before the Reconquista was completed, and that they were part of the modern Spanish state at its formation (with the conclusion of the Reconquista). The UK's control of Gibraltar is a bit more recent than that.

  • it's an entirely conscious editorial choice

A decision which may have been made easier by the colour of the attackers' skin.
