Maybe he was just late?
I once had someone be sarcastic at me because they thought I (putting the effort in on an old MTB) was racing them (roadie). I wasn't winning and they didn't approve of my road positioning at the lights - it was probably someone on here. But I was just trying to make a train.

I'm used to Cat5 promuters going all out to win the race to the next set of lights/stationary traffic but saw one on an electric bike doing the same today. He was really mashing away doing full nodder but with power assist. It struck me as a little bit odd.
