    Only 10 years ago, there were about 21,000 dairy farms in England, Scotland and Wales. Industry analysts believe there will be fewer than 5,000 left by 2026.

    That makes me very happy. I live in a 99% dairy farming part of the country, and it's disgusting, on top of the cruelty, the state of the rivers and roads, the amount of effluent that runs off into the sea. Wouldn't be surprised if the south coast of devon/dorset is a dead zone soon.

  • Hm, I'm not sure that's only good news. I remember reading somewhere that dairy farms had generally just become much larger. I think it may have been in an article about those proposed 'super-dairies' that were all over the headlines a few years ago. Somehow, I doubt that the volumes of cow's milk produced, and the number of cows abused for it, have decreased.
