  • It starts with the Pompetamine. My current do-it-all.

    Remember
4 years ago and first race.

    First upgrade

    New paint

FBNPNA commuter with 1x10, risers, mudguards and slick.
    Here with my mate's 1X9

Then I grew the idea of touring long distance with it.
I first wanted to put the compact drops back on and keep the trigger shifter using a front derailleur clamp. Buy some bikepacking bags and go.
But slowly with all the inspirational bikes going here and there. I wanted more.
About a month ago I went full #buyer and got some nice bits in order to convert the Pomp again.

    And trouble began.
I had ordered a wheelset for 10s. I got confused with the Shimano MTB 11s compatibility.
After returning them and searched the internet. I decided to give myself the real stuff.
    IMG_1073
and asked a friend to lace them for me.

Meanwhile I had put the lowrider and ortlieb panniers on for better commuting.

On Tuesday night I got my wheels back. So smooth Much beauty

Stripped the Pomp and started to put the parts and damn the struggle is real.
The chainstays and drop outs wouldn't clear the smallest cog for the chain so I put a washer on driveside.
It was already late, I was sweating and tired so went to sleep on it.

  • Now here I am.
I want to keep the Pomp as a fun beater - city shredder going single and 1x10.
That means getting a new frame. I was lusting after the Soma Wolverine, and TwinSix Standard Rando but I think it's about time to go custom as it's been a few years that I want to go that route.

So yesterday, I had some fun on BikeCad with the Wolverine geometry.

    Thinking about Orlowski.

    Inspirations

It's a project I hope will be finished before summer as I plan to ride from Brussels to Marseille with it.

Any suggestions and thoughts are welcome.

  • Nice pompetamine and look forward to seeing your tourer unfold.

I've been interested in those derailleur hangers like you have on the pomp... Is it the problem solvers one - what's the shifting performance like?

  • Subbed, looking forward to this.

  • Subbed - already looks great so looking forward to seeing what it turns into! 2nded on hearing about the derailleur hanger and compatibility!

  • Internet needs more bikes like that Pomp. Drop bar bikes made great again with flatbars, cant get enough of these!

  • Subscribed

  • Subscribed too ! The hub pair is gorgeous !

  • @sylem
    @velohobbit
    Cheers!
    Problem Solver indeed.

It did a great job for me and nice shifting too. My only drawback is that I have to take it off when I get a flat.

  • Yeah but for the added function to the bike seems a small price to pay IMO, what hub/cassette combo did you work with? (Apologies for hijacking the new build thread to talk about the old one, I'll shut up and let you progress soon!)

  • Yup totally worth it.
Running Shimano XT Hub with Deore 11-36

  • Project sounds nice, the Endpoint and Geekhouse were big inspirations for my CDF rando.

  • Thanks! Yours is pretty and classy. Always loved your builds!

  • Ive been strongly considering the problem solver on my nature boy disc, im feeling with tubeless it might actually be a non issue?

  • It was a big upgrade for me so I'd say just go for it and see for yourself.

  • In other news. I started exchanging mails with Jacek.

The main characteristics are the following.
    -fillet-brazed
    -Disc tabs
    -Sliding dropouts
-Eyelets for mudguards rear and front
-Eyelets for racks rear and front (with mid-fork mount)
-Mounts for three bottle cages (standards on ST and DT+ near the bottom bracket on DT)
-Internal rear brake cabling on top tube
-Shifting cable stops on down tube
    -Thin wishbone seatstays
-1 1/8 straight steerer lugged forks
-Clearance for 650bx47 tires with muguards and possibility to fit 700cx38.

    1250€ for the Zona frameset.

    What do you think ?

  • without having to read the thread, can you tell me do you have limited space for bike(s)?

I like everything on that list except sliding dropouts .. esp with mudguard eyelets .. why? It fucks up the geo, aesthetically shit and heavy.

SS with sliding dropouts and a 1x set up could weigh the same.

  • Sounds like mine but with 1 1/8th steel fork. Why DT shifting stops? Also price sounds a little steep...mine was 900 euros frame only. And thats with 44mm ht and OS zona, steel fork should only be 100 euros or so more. Ignore amey, SS dropouts are rad. I love mine. The weight is negligible because a bike like this will be 10+kg anyway

  • V Cool project.

Love the pomp! Do they all look that awesome? Is that the stock fork?

  • Fork is a Salsa Vaya

  • @amey
Not really limited but I try not to exceed five.
The reason I chose the sliding dropouts is in case I have rear mech issue while touring. Having the ability to continue to ride singlespeed is interesting.

    @Turkish
    Why not ?
Here's the explanation I got from Jacek:

The calculation for yours as following:

    • 850 basics
    • 150 sliders
      +100 wishbone
      +150 fork.
      gives 1250 together.

    @MCamb
    Ta!
    Lobos is right.

  • The reason I chose the sliding dropouts is in case I have rear mech issue while touring. Having the ability to continue to ride singlespeed is interesting.

Doesen't make sense. Get Polydrops instead. Maybe even rockers.

FWIW I've had a sliding dropout bike in the past. It generally never moves from the original build especially if you have (space for) other bikes. Its ALWAYS better to have more bikes with specific purpose than one with everything unless as I said space constraint.

  • Your experience isnt everyones experience. I had SS and knobblies on mine when I got it, then changed to gears and slicks for commuting. Now I'm back on SS and knobblies. Having the option of almost entirely changing a bikes purpose on whim is great fun. 100% reccommend sliders

  • 250 extra for sliders and wishbone seems steep, but if that his price not much you can do. If you want to use DT shifters why not just get bar end shifters?

  • yeah but you are young, you have time :P

Rockers > Sliders tho esp with mudguards
