  • Yep just received it. Ta

  • I haven't received mine! What size package did it come in??

  • Here's the dilemma:

I've got a lovely set of newly built wheels (by @cycleclinic of this parish) which I was intending to use on my commuter. They are kinlin xr22r on Surly new ultra hubs, tubeless with Marathon Supreme TLE. All ready to go.

Except they don't work on my commuter (Plug Charge 0 2016). Threads on aqa and mechanics have not come up with much as to how I can sort this so now I have a new plan, which is to convert my Cross Check to single speed, using these wheels, and run that as my commuter.

    This is the current build:

  • It's pretty nice as it is, but it doesn't get a lot of miles.

I'm thinking single speed and flat or riser bars.

Question: is anyone using a surly 135mm flip flop hub on a cross check, and if so, what sort of chainline results? What will I need to do about the crank?

Hoping just to put a bigger ring on the inside of the current Stronglight double and run with that. But also would consider a different crank / bb if there is any advantage in it.

  • Guess i will need to change the stem as the drops on it are Nitto 26mm clamp required.

What brake levers? It has XT V brakes on it.

What pedals? Want to be able to ride with normal shoes.

  • Already have these:

  • The 135mm surly hubs are designed for the same chain line as the outside of a normal mountain bike chainset, which gives a 53.5mm chain line. So I imagine that you will either need to change the bb or chainset to get the right chain line.

  • Right. Thanks.

Shimano hollowtech mtb double then, maybe.

  • Forget to mention, this is normal, the newer Shimano front derailleur have clearance issues.

What you can do is either get the new Sora one or the new Dura Ace 9100 one.

  • Ah, good to know!

  • Does anyone know if the brake bosses are removable on a cross-check?

  • Not without a hacksaw

  • Plus Surly makes the Steamroller and Straggler, if you're lookin to go fg or disc

  • Maybe phone Brixton Cycles and ask their opinion. BC sits firmly in the venn diagram intersection of BMX and Surly knowledge.

  • Nice idea, thanks.
I've been thinking generally a braze on with mounts at both wheel sizes would be cool and popular for those of us who haven't moved to disks yet

  • Moving to Brockley soon, realised I sold a lots of bike but the really nice one, haven't got a daily bike to locked up regularly, so got a Steamroller in 59cm.

Unfortunately the spare part I have are not exactly budget with Chris King headset, Sugino 75, DA chainring, Corsa G tyres...

  • That's quite a chunky chain to run on a freewheel with so few teeth, you might get some rubbing.

  • Yes, i think that may be an issue which i guess is why the website says 17t+ for 1/8th chain.

Shame that advice was not provided in the shop...

will put it on and see how it runs. I've just ordered some mtb cranks from ebay, a velo solo chain ring and a hollowtech bb; so when all that lot arrives, we may be able to get this show on the road.

    maybe.

  • A cheap SRAM one seemed to work well, PC1 I think.

  • Will wave if I see you in Nunhead. Welcome to the neighbourhood.

  • you can slam a surly ed?

  • Ed's upset that his parts bin projects don't run 28 pages. Please Hammer, don't hurt 'em

  • ordered a KMC Z610 because £9.50 from Wiggle

  • Ditto, will ride past the cemetery actually.

So far so good, very happy with how it look, 130mm stem felt a touch long, will fit 100mm and go from there.

Just need the 48t for the hill (currently 51/19).
