• Correct me if wrong:

The 'Great Repeal Bill' means incorporating all European laws (even ones we don't want) into British law.

And likely Brexit means being given what we are handed in one-sided negotiations (with the EU and others) as the weaker partner with a diminished world standing.

If legislature is going to be tied up for years 'Taking Back Control', then surely we are going to end up more Euro than a Brexiters worst nightmare?

  • Yes, all the EU laws will become our laws (which it itself will be a huge undertaking), and then we will be able to change them, but that will take years. And presumably a lot of companies will lobby to keep many of them as it will make their trading with Europe easier. So, there will be vast amounts of work (that could otherwise be spent on far more useful activities), and not a lot will change. Other than perhaps some knee-jerk jingoistic stuff.

Mark Elliot (among others) wrote about the Great Repeal Bill a while back.

As I understand it, it means that the government is handed a way to make any law they fancy, without that pesky parliament nonsense getting in the way, byt legislating as statutory instruments.

So taking back control, but into fewer, less accountable, hands.
