Custom Steel Stems

Forumengers — need some help finding UK builders that might be able to make a custom steel stem.

Need to find a stem for my Rourkie that fulfills my slightly perverted needs:

1”ahead with ~35mm stack height
31.8mm clamp
+/-6° rise
90mm
Faceplate [not pinch.]
Black black black.

Anyone know any UK builders doing this sort of thing (tig or fillet braze) for a reasonable cost?

Why not just use a shim with a 1' 1/8?
That way you have so many more options

That's what I currently have and it looks bastard horrible on 1" steerer / head tube / headset.

Also, that is not the only tricky needle to thread; finding a stem that is low-stack and only +/- 6° is also a bastard.

Thompson X2 is only options I've found but it's +/-10° and again it's a bulky stem in 1 1/8.

Please no more "why nots" "why don't you just" "buy another bike"etc.

There must be a lot of man hours making these stems so 150 seems OK to me.
I wouldn't pay it but I'm as tight as....

Also talking to Rourke currently — not holding out much hope for that, but wonder if any backyarders or small builders might be able to provide.

Nitto Craft 5 as above would be perfect but it's pricey for an OTP and only comes in silver so I'd have to powder coat .. more £££. Also it's 1 1/8 and a pretty deep stack.

Ah — looks promising ... will check this out.

£60 delivered ... only problem it's 46mm stack and +/- 10°. I could probably live with the rise if I could machine 5-6 mm from the stack ... looks possible.

There's tons of new UK builders in this post-Bicycle Academy era, I'm sure one would happily knock up a stem in an afternoon.

Not really ... that's only if I give up on the required spec, which I'm not really happy to do.

The Nitto ain't 1" or +/- 6°, has a massive 46mm stack height ... and silver.

I think it's fair to want to avoid those sorts of replies as it anticipates that I haven't spent the last 6 months trying to find an OTP option. I appreciate the thought though, I think.

Any frame builder will be able to build one for you, it just depends if they have time. Winston Vaz recently built a frame for @veLLo including a steel stem.

Well, yes ... it would be nice to go on a recommendation, and as you've alluded to, not all frame builders are willing, even if they're able.

Bespoked this year starting on 7 April and most the the UK builders will be there good place to find someone who would build it for you.
It's back in Bristol this year.

To clarify, Winston didn't do the stem on my bike, but I like that the sprayed velo orange stem gives that impression :)

Having a stem made by him was/is considered, as a later complement to the frame but I wanted to cap the budget back then.

Definitely something he can do for you and something he has done.
