keep the threads and use the top part of a threaded headset above the stem to preload the headset. Probably lighter than star nut and top cap.
But you'd end up with a massive stack above the stem or be clamping on the threaded part of the steerer surely?
As with all things stack it would largely depend on steerer length and stem clamp height. Was thinking the lock nut only above stem.
