For my GF's Genesis Caribou, we bought a B+ wheelset for spring/summer riding from CtBM that saved 2.25kg over the stock wheelset with tubed OnOne Floater 4.0:
Hope Pro4 135QR(FDS), 170QR
Hope skewers
Fatlab 55 27.5"x55mm
Schwalbe Nobby Nic (front) & Rocket Ron (rear), both 27.5x3.0"
Gorilla tape and Stans fluidI've since replaced my OOF frameset and wheels with a Sandman Gobi rolling chassis which used the 26" version of the Fatlab 55 rim. Gives the Vee8 4.0 tyres they came with a very round profile, only about 3.7" wide but they corner really nicely.
I don't think B+ would be that much heavier than a conventional 29er wheelset but you'd keep some of the grip qualities of the fat wheelset.
Maybe I'll start with 29er wheels then as that's the kind of the riding I'll do predominantly.
Can I just buy 170mm rear and 135mm front hubs and lace them to 29er rims? Anything about this particularly stupid?
