Hi all,
Can Velocity 'Deep V' rims be built onto a geared (e.g. 8 speed freehub) hub? Or are they designed to be fixed/SS only?
e.g. this
laced to this
Alternatively, does anyone make this kind of thing (or similar) OTP?
Basically looking for that 'hipster' aesthetic but with gears...

Rims are just hoops of metal with holes in.
So yes.

great, thanks!

Ok you're right @mdcc_tester - i'm just going to go with a NBT2 portable lockring tool instead...

I have just received a pair of Bontrager 27.5" rims which both happen to be asymmetric.
Can I just build them as fixed?
What is the deal with this asymmetry? -

helpful for front disc hubs and rear gear hubs. It is possible to build a wheel with less tension difference/spoke angle difference between the 2 sides.

Thank you for the additional information.
So, they aren't best suited to build as a fixed gear wheelset?

Depends on the hubs, some single fixed hubs are asymmetric. Since the difference is quite small and fixed hubs usually have plenty of bracing angle, it won't be disastrous to use offset rims even with symmetrical hubs.

Need to convert partners ridgeback speed rear to accept qr for a specific trailer hitch.
Think hub is from joytech, 7spd solid axle.
Can I simply remove the axle & replace with a hollow axle to accept qr, else what 7spd qr hubs are out there that'd be good for this?

Screw on 7 speed or cassette? If it's a cassette then use a shimano whatever 8/9/10 and a spacer for the cassette, if it's screw on there are plenty of cheap hubs about. If the axle is solid and cup cone and threaded you can probably find a hollow qr one the same thread and swap that out and reuse the same cones which would be easiest.

Nice one, will check then go one of those ways. Ta.

I will be building a disc brake front wheel for my Pompino and seek some component advice. I'll probably go with a Dt Swiss R460 rim, but am undecided on the hub. I'm torn between a Shimano Deore XT and a Hope Pro 4 or the Superstar Components Switch Ultra. The last two appeal as they will be directly compatible with my Escapade's thru axle fork (although Superstar are out of stock of the 9mm axle adaptors), the Shimano hub appeals on price and the simplicity and speed of centre-lock.
Given that the wheel will be mainly used in a Surly Disc Trucker fork and will see about 30 miles a day, every day in all weather and I have the tools to service all the hubs what are the thoughts on the best option or alternatives. I assume for a disc hub 32 spoke 3x would be my best bet for a solid wheel.

After following @bicyclepubes on Instagram, predicting shit trends for 2017, I decided that it'll be really useless to build a track wheelset on rims:
- 27.5"
- tubeless compatible
- extra wide
- asymmetric
All done now! Looks better than I anticipated.
Would actually ride!

That's the kind of wheels @amey would ride.
@coventry_eagle those would be good for polo

Found these:
Koozer xm470
ali express linkCheap hub with star racket freehub (like DT swiss!...)
Their earlier normal freehub version gets pretty bad reviews on mtbr.com. The 15mm aluminium axle gets dented and the freehub explodes...
Has anyone tried the star racket version?

What options for a tubeless rim with a braking surface in 2017?
Looking for something of an all-rounder; 32h, ~19mm inner width and less than 450g.
The new Open Pro seems to fulfil all the criteria, anyone know their ETA in the UK?

Ryde Pulse Sprint (395g) or the Ryde Pulse Comp (430g). Not quite the inner width you want (18.5mm) but everything else is there.
A cheaper option is the Kinlin XR22T. -

Kinlin XR22T jumps through all those hoops, and you can buy them right now, including an offset version.

Right... got a conundrum... I've got a pair of silver Hope hubs I want to lace 3x front and rear to some grey Archetypes... all I need is spokes and someone skilled to build them... My local, the Velohouse, charges £70 per pair to build and Sapim Race at £1 per spoke totaling £134...
Alternatively, I've found a pair of used Hope Hoops (black 32h 3x on Stans Alpha 400) for about the same price...
Which would you go for - ready built used Stans or LBS built Archetype?
That's Hope hubs off the list then ;-)
