  • I'm running a SunRace 11-42 cassette, Shimano XT M772 9 speed mech and dura-ace 10 speed bar end shifters and the shifting is crap. I'm pretty much riding a bike with 6 gears.

I'm sure I read that the 9 speed mech would be compatible with the cassette so I reckon the shifter is the problem. Would I be right to think I could just get some shimano/sram brifters and that would be that? And if so are there any in particular I should be looking for? They'll be for a 1x10 gravel bike. Ta.

  • Run the bar end shifters as friction shifters?

I think that's a shadow rd, meaning it will not necessarily be compatible with the road pull ratios. So your brifters suggestion might not work either.

  • @SteadyCam
I wouldn't suggest trying to friction shift 10spd cassettes, it's tricky enough with 8! RD-M772 uses the standard road pull ratio so should work fine but it may be struggling to reach up to a 42T sprocket (the shimano docs say it'll do a low sprocket of 32T-36T). While those are conservative numbers you're a way over the spec, ~1" extra on the diameter. Have a tweak with the B-screw to see if you can improve the situation.

As an alternative, you haven't got a unidirectional shimano chain on the wrong way round have you?

  • I tried the friction shifter route but couldn't get it to work or find much online. Think the rear mech is not shadow but would replace if it fixed the problem. Thanks for your input.
