• got the bearings out and put new ones in, put it all back together tonight and it's doing the same thing.. I'm running 42T narrow wide front ring with 11-32T tiagra cassette with a 105 5800 med cage rear mech.. is the 1x causing an issue? do I need a clutch rear mech?

  • What is it doing? You don't need a rear mech with a clutch. In my experience a 1x drivetrain with a narrow-wide chainring does make more noise than a "normal" 2x drivetrain.

  • Not being able to pedal backwards doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong.

Derailleur drivetrains aren't designed to run backwards.
