We have reconciled the feeding habits of our cats (one a glutton, the other a grazer) using technology. Higgs now has a robotised feeder that dispenses a small meal three times a day- she is no longer fat.
James has a bowl that holds three days worth of food, it only opens for him as it scans the chip in his neck before releasing the shutter.
James is now gaining weight and is a happier cat. Previously Higgs would eat ALL of the food, ALL of the time. Unless James got lucky and managed to grab some.

Ada does this, and she follows through to completion by puking everywhere afterwards. I think her dominating behaviour is making Newton stressed at meal time, resulting in him becoming a more and more effective alarm clock.
What technology did you invest in? We need it.

Snap- Higgs was very pukey.
I'll dig out the amazon links, it's around £110 for both- made an incredible difference.

Ok, SureFeed Microchip cat feeder for James- means he knows that he always has food. It holds enough food for three days for him, so probably two days for Newton.
Cat Mate C3000 feeder for Higgs, holds ~3kg of food and dispenses a user defined portion up to three times per day. Higgs rushes over the instant she hears the motor, empties the bowl but has stopped puking, due I suspect to a) not being able to eat more than her own food and b) getting a small portion 3 times per day.

Also means that with a big bowl of fresh water and a clean litter tray you can leave them for a weekend.

This is great to hear. I may have to do something similar. Did you have to insert a new chip into James?
-
• #6059
Nope, uses the standard chip that vets fit when they're kittens.

I've been trying to acclimatise Sam to the outdoors (he gets his little boys op on Monday), and I'm currently faced with a situation I've never had before. A 6 month old kitten who is so terrified of the outdoors. Usually, they have a natural curiousity and I'm chasing around the garden to get them back inside.
Sam will sit inside the open door and might venture out about 3ft but the slightest thing (the wind blowing, a siren in the distance, a neighbours door closing) and he turns and bolts inside. If I carry him out, he struggles and darts back in.
I'm hoping this will change and, as soon as he has recovered from the op, I will try cat treat bribery.
Please has anyone else experienced this? How did you overcome it? I want him to be an indoor/outdoor cat and using the outside litter tray as soon as he is safe to go out alone.

Rats, just wrote a fairly detailed reply and deleted it...
In a nutshell :
I'm so sorry for not keeping up with your very sad, then much happier cat news. He's very cute indeed.
It's frustrating but I wouldn't worry about his anxiety about the outside world just yet. My sister's cat was the same but now she isn't obviously fearful, she just doesn't particularly like it outside! I'm sure his confidence will increase over time, especially if you reward him - exposure therapy, innit? ;) When it's warmer it'll be easier for you to spend time out there with him too.

(cute) thieving bastard from down the road. Initially came over to try and chat up our two girls, now he seems to think it's his house too and nonchalantly strolls in and steals their food. And eats it ALL if not chased off. Need to get a new cat-flap with a chip sensor.

He seems to know his way around our house too, so maybe used to come in before we moved here a couple of years ago. Also very sheddy so rather he stayed outside!

We give ours encore, it's not cheap but it's really good, we switched from Iams and the improvement in her coat was massive. Whenever ocado do a 3 for 2 or half price offer we'll buy it in bulk.
