If you put the nut half way up the slammed stem, it will work for anybody else using the fork in the same frame, although you might need a longer preload screw if you're keeping 1" of spacers above the stem.
Also, kidding. There's no way I'd glue a star nut into a steerer, I'd make a proper bond-in nut and glue that in.
Thanks for the comprehensive answer as always. Think I'll go with a compression bung. Or leave it since the bearings are preloaded enough before it came loose. It's just irritating having the spacers rattle a bit above the stem. There's no play in the actual steerer though.
