If the hanger was aluminium, it can quite easiliy get bent and need bending back with a fancy tool. A steel one is much less likely to bend, though if you have the tool you might want to check its alignment.
As to root cause, my guess is something (like a mini stainless steel squirrel getting his kicks riding along the lower chain) jammed the derallieur and the force from pedaling wrapped it up over the cassette? If the chain got twisted in all that it maybe split? Can you check on CCTV?
