• Anyone had experience with chinese carbon bars? Looking for some carbon low rise risers for the harry hall and found these. I dont weigh much and wont be abusing them. Should I trust modern chinese carbon over 20 year old monkelites?

  • hylix? experience, opinions? http://www.ebay.pl/itm/351849537871?ul_noapp=true - seller claims 280 lbs weight limit and should fit 28c tires.

  • I used the unbranded eBay ones for a while, £12 posted, 680 wide. They were fine, didn't flex or anything

  • Carbon right? Loads of people use monkeylites and quills without issue so I reckon it'll be fine

  • Carbon yeah but oversize. Didn't click your link or realise you meant 25.4
Still I reckon they'll be as good as 90s monkey lites

Seems kinda relevant to this thread.

  • got those exact ones in 31.8 flavour. pretty happy with em, been commuting on them for a couple of months now, hadn't realised they came in 25.4 else I might have bought those!

  • Ha, excellent watch.

  • I got some the same handlebars (more rise: 8cm) but without the logos/print a week ago.
I've been using them everyday and they're solid.
Mine were 460mm in length and weigh around 105 grams.
They were also advertised in 3k matte finish but turned out to be UD matte which I prefer so win win.

  • Sorry to be a lazy prick, but there are so many messages in this thread it's hard to form a conclusion from just skimming...

Currently contemplating a pair of 40-50mm wheels for my WW-ish build. Had always assumed I would go for Farsports, but they are about $580 plus postage for the cheapest set on EdHubs, which doesn't seem that cheap anymore...

What is the general consensus on the 'best' Far East place to source at the moment? Another option I'm looking at is getting some rims from Light Bicycle for about $340 and getting them built up here. That still seems expensive to me, but at least I would have more control over the build.

Do I just need to suck it up and pay $600+ or am I missing a magical retailer that can do things cheaper? I see CN*Carbon mentioned in some places, are they all pretty much the same quality?

  • I got cn*carbon wheels from ebay after reading a couple of people's experience on here and they've been fine so far. The general consensus seems to be that they're solid and probably won't explode but they're a bit heavier than the equivalent light bicycle wheels. As a fatty, I'm fine with that 🤗

  • As far as I can deduce, Farsport, Light Bicycle and Yoleo are about as good as you will get direct from the manufacturer. I know plenty of wheel builders who love Light Bicycle.

CN*Carbon are less spendy, and anecdotally are probably better than most but still have the problems one might associate with cheap carbon. I'm light and don't descend mountains much, so I went for them. Haven't got them yet so can't comment on quality.

  • Cheers.

I'm relatively light and the roads here are good quality and flat. Although the heat might be an issue if I do one of the mountains (UAE).

  • I went with CN*Carbon - limited time on them, but they do seem nice. Came with rim tape which was a pleasant surprise.

I'm 86kg so far from a featherweight, so wasn't after weightweenie wheels.

On the other hand, Parcelforce who couldn't deliver them (or leave any evidence of trying)
    can do one.

  • I bought one of these in 27.2: http://s.aliexpress.com/yAbmyIvE

It turned up today so I fitted it with a bit of carbon paste in the seat tube and grease on the little clamp wedges.

As it appears to be a copy of the enve post, I had a peek at their guidance with regards to torque. Apparently 8-12nm for the saddle rail clamp for the genuine article. I gave it 8nm and it seems to be holding firm, and 4nm for the actual seat clamp (clamp says max 5nm).

Sat on it for a minute or two bouncing up and down and wiggling around and nothing's cracked or snapped yet. First ride on it tomorrow, so I'll let you know if I'm still alive.

  • Does it fit oval rails, round rails or both?

  • is the bolt actually that long?

  • Don't know. Round rails for sure. In the enve tech doc, they mention different rails for oval carbon rails. So I'd assume not.

@negaatio yes, when there's a saddle fitted, the wedges don't sit flush to the sides of the post so the extra length is required.

  • Been for a ride with the seatpost, all good. Nice and comfy, saddle didn't shift and it didn't snap. Note that I'm 2m tall and 93kg, so plenty of weight and leverage on it.

Popped it out after the ride and had a look and it all looks fine below and around the clamping area too.

  • This is good to know, really keen on this but worry my 95kg frame would destroy it.

  • Only 2kg difference :) I'll let you know if it snaps off and stabs me in the bum.

Edit: Ricky mentioned something about a new old bike? Got a current projects thread yet?

  • Yes, picked up a used Cannondale CAAD9, will be posting a project thread soon enough, once I figure our what parts I want to get. It'll probably be a long process buying all the parts. Looking to go full orient carbon for post/stem/bars. Any recommendations?

  • Sweet! Looking forward to seeing it :)

Not really, I don't know why, but for some reason the idea of carbon bars/stem make me more nervous than Chinese carbon wheels/seatpost...

  • That's odd, considering a seatpost fail could end you ;)
