  • I have a spur off the main ring in the front room that leads to an external socket. Can I run a c. 4m cable from this socket to put power in a shed? At what point is this a bad idea? Does this come under Part P?

  • You are not allowed to run a spur from a spur. The logic is that the ring circuit can cope with a much higher amperage than a single piece of 2.5 twin. If you start adding strings of 13amp sockets off the ring you compromise the capacity of the breaker to operate because it's set up for a ring.

You can put a plug on the end of your 4m cable with a 13amp fuse in it. It would be worth checking that you have rcd protection on the external socket and that the rcd operates.
