  • You don't need batons. I've a massive pent roof with no batons. Re felt the bits you need to, make sure you get a decent overlap then climb up with a bucket of tacks and put one tack every hand width to secure it.

  • In another random musing I noticed you can buy a workshop for £3,500.

Is there any reason why you couldn't insulate one of these as a cheaper way of building one of those pre-fab garden offices.

  • The fit and finish is not likely to be anywhere near as good meaning you would need to do a lot more to prevent water ingress. Basically it would be a bodged version, not that there is anything particularly wrong with that!

  • I wonder if they were put there to protect from the wind.

Doing a bit of reading around I found a site that recommends using "mineral faced Torch on roofing felt" (the stuff used for flat roofs). The logic being it's cheaper and better than special purpose shed stuff. The guy says it can do up to 30yrs and ebay suggests that you can pick it up for 50-60% of the cost of shed stuff.

  • No worries, don't let me wake you up ;-)

  • My central heating system needs to be represurised every week or so as it keeps depressurising. There are no obvious leaks, short of pulling up all the floorboards on the groundfloor whats my next move?

  • Right, just bought a new plunge saw - anyone interested in buying my old Schleppach one?
    It's this: http://www.screwfix.com/p/scheppach-special-edition-pl55-2-160mm-plunge-saw-240v/2535g
And I've got 2x1400mm rails and 2x800mm rails. It does the job fine, but it's definitely a starter/casual saw. Make me an offer if interested!

I'm expressing interest, I don't know what £$£$ is suitable to represent that interest however.

  • What pressure does it go up to when on?
Could be that your expansion tank needs draining and re-pressurising.
    Otherwise, some seals need replacing.
Either way a service should identify the issue.

  • On which note, can anyone recommend someone to service a Vailant ecoTec in E4?

  • Someone on here recommended this guy, did a decent job for me (turned up when he said he would, fixed the boiler and gave it a service) http://www.full-flame.co.uk/ Think he covers North and East

  • What Aggi said.

  • Is your pressure release outfall discharging a lot? look for staining etc. If so it could be expansion tank as @Ramsaye said. You can check pressurisation if you find the schraeder valve, googleable how-to as I was looking at mine recently.

  • With all the rails - around a hundred and fifty quid?

  • Keiran at Plumbsafe has done work for me a few times. He's based in Leytonstone and a good, honest lad.

  • I have a spur off the main ring in the front room that leads to an external socket. Can I run a c. 4m cable from this socket to put power in a shed? At what point is this a bad idea? Does this come under Part P?

  • Any one have a contact for a good roofer, need the lead flashing redoing and some other work as water is creaping in. House in stockwell so south based would be good.

  • I read @Backstop 's post as meaning a 4 meter extension cable to the shed,
where he will be operating equipment with potentially high initial draw that will keep tripping his 'fuse'/mcb/rcd/rcbo,
rather than a 4mm diameter cable to .........

    (Editted to add 'mcb').

  • It's a 4m extension, 4mm core is in the budget. Above ground in conduit. Plan a is to replace the socket with a rcd built in socket to protect against cable damage.
There would be some power tool use, but I'm more interested in constant power for 40w heater.
I've used a standard extension via this socket to power tools already, so it doesn't seem too sensitive.

  • Nb. I'm not totally naive around electrics, I'm trying to get a feel for the sanity of the project up front.

  • That does fall foul of part P though?

  • Better to add a whole new ringmain rather than messing with what's already there.

You don't want shed activities tripping power in the house and it'd be a PITA to isolate house sockets when you want to reconfigure the shed.

Also, meddling with existing stuff of unknown quality is just asking to reveal a problem with the existing stuff that you can't not fix.

  • Well that's kind of the point, I would like to just connect a plug to the home end of the cable and plug into the existing socket*. Within the scheme is to inlcude rcd at wall of home and fused connections within the shed.

Also s new ring main adds 100's to the cost
