Why would they bother? No one cares, most people are there to ring cowbells and watch their friends in the amateur and novelty races.

Why would any of them bother? It's to put on a show. That's why there's always a suicidal solo break that might just almost might nearly so close OMG they're gonna w... oh no the bunch sprint got them.
