Anyone know anything about disc brakes?

  • Hi folks,
    I'll probably be going for a custom audax 650b disc bike with dynamo hub, steel frame and steel curved blade fork.
    I'm hesitating between I.S. mount and flat mount (160 mm discs). With the current and probable future state of technology, which one should I choose ? Would there be clearance issues with dynamo hub and flat mount ?

  • Any idea what's in Muc-off Disc Brake cleaner? Have a feeling someone said IPA.
    Can I use that instead of iso alc on the pistons?

    Rode in this morning and there was no noise at all now so other than possibility of a bit of drag it's not really an issue.

  • Bunch of solvents that are probably safe to use on pistons and seals. Probably.

    I'll save it for next time it starts making noise. Right after I spray grease the whole thing..

  • I spotted some in Maplins too. They have a spray and a 1L can of isobooze.

  • I purchased some of the spray years ago, still got it, but it's an expensive way to purchase it.

  • Yeah, I didn't bother. It's quite now. I'll wait for the next ShittyLaneExplorationMission™ and see how the new pads hold up on the dB meter.

  • @edscoble recommended a hydro brake for flat bar use, which I'll probably get. However, one day I may put drop bars back on my Pompino, is there a calliper which has both flat bar and drop bar levers available?

  • The shimano calipers seems similar enough between road and mtb but its a bit of a non issue. You may as well buy them as a full set up, especially as road levers are full of shifty gubbins and cost a million times more than mtb ones.

  • Although you're on about singlespeed stuff, just get shimano, they're much better than anything else at their price range and better than most stuff that costs lots more.

  • For commuting duties, Deore is pretty decent, SLX if your wanna go a step up (quick lever reach set-up, banjo (is that the right name? instead of fixed routing at the caliper compared to Deore) and Saints (quad pots) if you need the extra stopping power.

  • Unless, I'm just being inept, I couldn't see a Shipman drop bar brake only hydro lever ie no shifter.

  • Are juins better than full mechanical?

    All things equal - including top quality cable housing and set-up - they have a bit more bite and similar to hydraulic modulation.

    You have personal experience with both?

  • Yeah, I realised you were after singlespeed after writing stuff, I stand by not worrying about it though, if you decide to get drops just buy a whole new set up, there's not much point getting a caliper you can swap levers out on, especially when a set of deores are so cheap.

    I'm really just being doubtful and trying to compare my options. Thank you for the insight. It seems Juin Tech are a really good bet for my needs/wants. I'm just a bit sceprical about the hybrid actuation. Movement of both pads and self alignment are obvious winners in my case though.

  • I'm after a hybrid, which means either R1 or HY/RD.

    In favour of HY/RD they automatically adjust for pad wear, but lever throw can be an issue (although there is a mod).

    In favour of R1 is weight and price. Weight is not a consideration for me and the cynic in me is wary that they're too cheap, however I've not read of any quality concerns.

  • We use the Juins for cyclocross racing, where they are great. Cheap, work well, seem to withstand abuse.

    I would be mildly concerned if people were descending mountains on them, however.

  • Due to the smaller fluid volume of the system heating faster?

  • Sadly lacking in mountains around here (although I did get a nosebleed at the top of the Col Du Garboldisham once).

    I've not read anything bad about R1 (quite the opposite), but the pad adjustment niggles.

    And I only need one, so HY/RD are actually cheaper for what I need.

  • Pretty much. That and there is no reservoir to contain the expanded volume of fluid - as far as I know. I'd assume that if they got hot enough to expand, it would push the pistons out and you'd get draggy brakes.

    That said, they are sold as brakes, they are being imported, people are using them, and people on 'ere have said it's not a problem as the mineral oil they use doesn't expand significantly with heat.
