failed a 300k audax
Sounds shit :(
-
• #578
yeah, but there's no filtering or detail on mine, it's just a sort of short list that seems to run out after 15 items or so

Not as shit as failing a 600k audax.
The annoying thing about Sat's ride was I had a backup nav (phone) but it basically fell apart on the shitty lanes so after the Garmin died I was riding one-handed, holding the phone down trying to follow the route in the dark. It was stupid and since the Garmin lost 12hrs of my ride I thought 'fuck it' and bailed, getting a train back.
I still did my training as I'd ridden to the start but have no data for it and have an Edge 1000 in a box of rice... useless Garmin waterproofing. The 600 was failed when my older Edge 800 shat itself after 450k. The etrex I was using as a backup didn't work properly either so I bailed with a train home then too.

I'll have to dig out my etrex and look into it. I need to relearn how to use it anyway if I'm going to use it for backup. Remind me and I'll see what mine does re: lists of services.
Which maps are you using? OSM or Garmin? -
• #581
On the where to options on an etrex 30 are the following categories
Tracks,
Routes,
Waypoints (these are user loaded)
Addresses (enter your search here)
Coordinates
All POI
Cities
Intersections
Shopping
Food and drink
Fuel services
Lodging
Entertainment
Recreation
Attractions
Transportation
Extras (this is a poi/csv file I loaded with all uk bike shops)Within each of these categories there are some with sub categories.
For example food and drink lists by cuisine type. -

@platypus are you talking about the list of search items, as @freezing77 mentioned above or the list of results?
-
• #583
can't remember. I'm on OSM maps...tbh it's not a problem for me normally, I just ask someone "where is the nearest train station that takes me to x big city"
-
• #584
I think most of your questions have been answered but in the where to options, things in categories are listed in order of their distance from you with nearest being first.
It is possible to load your own categories using a poi/csv file.

Very helpful, thanks.

Any idea why RWGPS isn't showing distance along the route on the mobile app?

Hammerhead Karoo, another option to crush Garmin.

To, it will.
Can't wait to get my hands on one.

Ffs... I'd pretty much settled on the wahoo elemnt, and now you show me this! :)
-
• #590
Just read about that - if it does what it claims and actually works, without the tedious buggy mess that plagues my Garmin Edge it will be a godsend.

• #591
I'd still wait. This hasn't even been priced yet.

If...

Quite

I've got the H1 and, honestly, sometimes the navigation is really poo, especially if it realises too late that you've taken a turn. It'll do that thing Google Maps does too, where it'll chuck you onto pedestrian crossings instead of following the road.
Once it had me stuck in a loop on Kellett Rd to Effra Road and back on to Mervan Road, I did two cycles before realising it had gone buggy. Managed to knock it out of the loop by just continuing on to a new road though.
To be fair, I haven't tested it in a while though, but I know they've been updating the software.

I've been using this to split GPX files into smaller 100km chunks, but is there something similar that won't kill the elevation data?

http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input?convert_format=gpx
Seems to do everything I want EXCEPT splitting.
-
• #597
GPS Babel can do it, although only by command line not GUI, iirc
-
• #598
GPS Babel maybe. It's not the most user-friendly but very powerful https://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-1.5.4/filter_track.html
-
• #599
Thanks, I did have a look at that but couldn't find mention of splitting.

Thanks, I'll see what happens...
Split by distance.
The input track will be split into several tracks if the distance between successive track points is greater than the distance given as a parameter. The distance must be numeric and can be in miles or kilometers, expressed as one of the character "k", or "m". If sdistance is given no parameters, this option has the same effect as the split option without parameters. If there is more than one track, use the pack option before before using this.
For example, to split the track if the distance between points is greater than 100 meters, use this:
gpsbabel -t -i gpx -f in.gpx -x track,pack,sdistance=0.1k" -o gpx -F out.gpx
The sdistance option can be combined with the split option. The track then will be split only if both time and distance interval exceeds the supplied values. This technique can be used to filter out gaps from the tracklog. The gap is kept only if the gps device is without signal for longer time than that given and during that time it moves a distance over that given. This example splits the track if the device is without signal for at least 5 minutes and during this time moves more than 300 meters:
gpsbabel -t -i gpx -f in.gpx -x track,pack,sdistance=0.3k,split=5m -o gpx -F out.gpx
Edge 800s 'can' fuck out on long rides. I've had it happen on a 600k before but I've also raced a bunch of 24hrs with no issues - presume the problem lies in the routing which I don't use during races.
Sat I failed a 300k audax because my Edge 1000 got water in the SD slot again - even though it was closed AND in a protective case that I'd bought after the same issue during TCR. Useless.
I'm now looking at going to a Wahoo, trying to fix my phone and probably keeping the etrex 30x as a backup because AA running is good if I lose dynamo power.
