so what you are asking for is a large adjustable, go to a garage. Thats what i did stripping down my dads old raleigh, darn cup, its 36mm i believe but just used one of there gigantic spaqnners and it came off no problems

I've got one you can borrow.
Where are you based? -

bollocks - the flats are rubbish for removing that cup - make a tool like this - below
mine has never failed to remove those cups
(choose a large aggressive thread like a car wheel bolt has on it. smaller, tighter and shallower thread will strip. use oil or grease on the thread of the bolt. you can get it together for a pound or two ): -

I've also got the bits for that tool if someone wants to use.
I've always got them out with the bb tool and smacking it with a rubber mallet. -

Hey chaps, sourced one already so carson feel free to barge away! Thanks for the help sdw.
Im not trying to take one out, trying to put it in! Got another couple turns to go before its fully in there. That sheldon tool looks good though, i tried to build one but I didnt have the right sized bolts and things to do it.
On a side note, I found a good place to get high quality ball bearings for BB's.

i just had a go with a spanner and my fixed cup was loose anyway. the adjustable cup is seized though - it's of the slotted variety - i think a variation on the sheldon tool with some sort of purchase in the slots could work well
-
• #9
there's no need to get purchase on the slots as the squeeze the Sheldon tool will exert will be enough to sort that.
the tool will work for fitting and unfitting normal and counter threads

I made a sheldon tool but had to saw it out of the bb shell after i stripped the threads on the bolt. Now i've seen caustic soda method i'm going to melt the fucker out
-
• #15
umm.. if thats a steel cup I don't think caustic soda will work.

• #16
indeed

Agreed. I was worried it might be steel.

Thanks so much for your help- proper knowledge and proper tools win again! Nice to have met you too and enjoyed the chat. I'll be in touch once the frame is painted for the other bits and bobs to be done. Cheers!

i already warned against making the tool wrongly. :
"choose a large aggressive thread like a car wheel bolt has on it. smaller, tighter and shallower thread will strip. use oil or grease on the thread of the bolt"
if it's been made properly then it is a "proper tool"

prehistoric dredge, does anyone have a sheldon-esque tool about? Or could tell me where they managed to source their parts, struggling to find a suitable bolt online
Anyone got one I can take off their hands? Have a cup and cone BB that I want to play with but my adjustable spanner isnt big enough to accommodate the fixed cup. Cheers!
