  • With TCX turn by turn nav enabled it does around 10-11 hours, was my experience.

  • Anyone else having trouble with OSM map generator? I've tried twice now with slightly different map sets and both times I've not received the second email.

"This request could not be found in the queue. Most likely the map is already generated and you received another email containing the url where the map can be downloaded, or you should receive that email shortly. "

  • Anyone know if ridewithgps can easily split routes into smaller lengths?

  • This fucking legend has done it before with another app, maybe listen to his awesome advice?

    or

  • Splitting a route in RideWithGPS loses all the POIs along the way so that's shit. None of the other splitters seem to work with a route.

  • Wasn't sure of the best place to ask this:
Is there a mount for an iPhone (5s) that works mounted to TT bars? I have no more room on the tops of my handlebars and so for occasional navigation would like to mount between the arms.

  • Looks like this might work on the aerobars:

Might need to shim the mount a little.

  • Quadlock Universal stuck on an iphone case?

  • By none of the other splitters do you also mean this one (https://www.lfgss.com/comments/13048147/) that you recommended before?

  • RideWithGPS won't split and keep your waypoints but you can still split the route.

    Ok cheers.

Using a Garmin 200 I've found it shits itself when using waypoints as it greatly increases the size of the file; so i've got used to following routes without waypoints which seems to work OK. Not as good as using a GPS with base maps, but works fine.

Edit - meant cues not waypoints

  • Hi everyone,

I have a newbie question. I want to start riding with some form of GPS that would show me the map and give me directions. I looked at Garmin products, but they are really expensive.

I've just read about RideWithGPS and the offline navigation sounds like it would run well. I have an Iphone with no contract, so I rarely turn on the roaming data. So the questions is: does RideWithGPS navigate accurately using the offline map/route mode?

Any details of your experience using it would be appreciated!

    Thanks.

  • In the finest tradition, an answer to your question by suggesting something else. I've not used rwgps but osmand does what you want and seems pretty reliable

    http://osmand.net

  • Yes.

I used RWGPS as a backup during the TCR. Also have a look at OSMAnd (Android, not sure about iphone) and Locus Map (same).

I found OSMAnd flakey. Support's answer was to remove some of the maps and try again. My answer was to pay for RWGPS.

  • Cheers guys! Thanks for the info.

  • Trying to use RWGPS yesterday after the Garmin died, it cried about the 3Down route I'd loaded from a GPX file.

It didn't have cues so couldn't do proper TBT nav. Is there a magical way to automatically generate cue points or do I have to redraw the route?

  • No idea. Was it 1000 and what did you do?

  • No, RWGPS app on phone.

Uploaded GPX to RWGPS, picked 'Copy to my Routes', then tried to navigate with it on phone.

  • After looking into a second hand Edge 800, and reading this thread, I'm now considering an etrex 20x. Would be good to hear from someone who knows it, my intended uses are:

    – Audax: planning routes and uploading to device, then following turn by turn
    – Audax: recording the ride and generating gpx for validation of diys
    – Touring: being aware of the surroundings of where I'm passing through
    – Touring: being able to plan a route for the day on the go
    – When things go wrong: finding the nearest town, station, cycle shop, pub, whatever

Cadence, wattage, heart rate absolutely wasted on me. That said, I like having a sense of my average speed but I assume the etrex has this, at least? Lastly, I have an external USB battery pack that I can use in long rides, can someone confirm this is possible or if I can only run it with AA batteries?

  • I use it for all of those things. It works great except the interface is a bit clunky.

Not so hot on being able to find the nearest town, station etc - it just gives me a long list rather than something in a good order, but maybe I'm being cackhanded

  • I have a 30x and 800. I find etrex units to be clunky to use generally but they seem more reliable and you can power them with AAs. I use a lot of the cycling data so etrex is less use to me but probably better for your needs. Etrex mounts either make it too easy or too hard to get the units out - mine is too easy so the mount is feckin' useless. I kept it in my saddle bag as a triple backup only. Etrex can do moving speed and total time, etc. So you'll probably get what you need from it. I've run my HCx from external power - not actually sure I've done it with 30x but almost certain it's possible.

  • Isn't that list of services normally sorted by distance from current position?

  • Thanks for this, thanks @platypus too. I'm tempted to butcher a garmin edge quarter turn mount to the back of the etrex.

Probably the Edge is still a good option, but reliability is a concern for me. I already had my much simpler 200 turn off by itself a few times, and it already lost the route on a tandem ride that was NOT fun. It just started beeping off course on a straight road, and never found it back.

For now the dealbreaker is that if I end up touring in South East Asia, for instance, the etrex will be a lot more useful than an 800. At least it seems this way to me.

  • No need to butcher, apparently
