I tried but I think the pad wear was uneven and I couldn't be bothered faffing, needing to ride home so put them in properly.
Yesterday's ride was hours of listening to stuff get caught in the caliper and make horrid grinding noises. Is that normal? I mean, I understand horrid noises when actually braking but just riding along, hit puddle, now caliper sounds like a traction engine that someone has dropped a bag of bolts into the middle of.

Dude, your set up sound just wrong from the beginning!
-

One of those legs of the spring touching the caliper?
Usually the case if your pads are pretty worn down.
-
• #3280
Yeah, they're worn so it was more noticeable but it's been doing it since TCR really. Actually they were worn pads too. Hmm... time to fit the sintered pads re-center calipers and see how that goes.
-
• #3281
Yeah, I should've stuck with rim brakes.

I have had similar 'noise' after riding through puddles, for me it was that one side of the caliper was very close to rotor. Although I had pads aligned so they weren't catching, crud that was getting onto on the caliper from puddles/being thrown off the pads/rotor, on the side the rotor was entering was catching/making the noise, rather than anything on the pads. Shifting the caliper over a bit helped. Hope this makes sense.

Yeah, I just need to get out of my PJs clean the bike (again) and fit new pads, realign calipers and see how that goes.
-
• #3284
Yeah, new pads and re-center should solve this.

I guess we've had the discussion about mechanical vs hybrid brakes. Where can I find that? What was the consensus? Are there an actual benefit with juin tech or trp hy/rd?
I need to find a good SSCX solution. I have mechanical levers and an internal cable route so I'm inclided to use cable. But my experience with bb7 have been very poor. -
• #3286
Are you a whippet or a masher? If the later, full Hydraulic. If the former, Spyres for an easy life or Juins for a bit more raw grab.
-
• #3287
Probably right in the middle.
Bb7 was in no way easy life compared to even cheap hydraulic. So I'm skeptical about spyres.
Full hydro drop bar setups are still few and expensive though. And I have levers with a nice shape.
Are juins better than full mechanical? Will I be dissapointed with them as I 'm acustomed to full hydro on the other bike. -

Are juins better than full mechanical?
All things equal - including top quality cable housing and set-up - they have a bit more bite and similar to hydraulic modulation.
Spotted this this thing the other day... at the levers it felt great.

:)
These pads were worn but usable on Friday night. It's actually eaten one of the legs of the spring off.

I put new metal pads in, loosened caliper, gripped brake and tightened caliper and the result is a fairly off-centre disc. It's like one of the pistons is moving more than the other. So I held the disc over to the moving side and the other side was definitely moving too, so I'm not sure what the issue is. I've now manually pushed the caliper over so the disc is more centered. It's gripping the disc though so basically already braking without touching the levers. There must be some trick I'm missing...

You got a sticky piston, not uncommon, but does explain why you're experiencing all this.

Ooh er.

All this hassle is putting me off replacing my Pompino fork to get a disc brake at the front for better wet weather braking. I was going to place the order tonight. Now I'm not sure.
-
• #3294
Place the order anyway.
It's worth the hassle.
Just bear in mind we are talking about Hippy, whom is a little above human!

Thanks for the reassurance. On a flat bar bike is my best option full hydro from an Mtb range. If so what's the go to set?
-
• #3296
Flat bar are a piece of piss, you can easily get a good cheap front one, like this from Bike24 (less than £20);

You still need a rotor and adaptor (IS mount to post mount), standard stuff.

Whatever is cheapest on CRC and made by Shimano

Rotor, 160mm -
Adaptor (if your is IS mount), 160mm front;

Hmm, they both move though so it's not stuck. Clearance is too tight to note if one is moving more than the other. So much for proven tech... :P

mm, they both move though so it's not stuck.
I said sticky, not stuck.
Snip snip? ;)
