  • Anyone got any good experience of transitioning their company from wasteful, not very environmentally friendly, to nice, sustainable company that uses innovative ways to minimise their environmental impact?

I'm thinking that my company (office based, multi-disc consultancy) could do with having a sort of environmental 'champion' who would come up, implement and track initiatives to reduce waste etc. within the office.

I'm wondering how easy this is to do in reality, and whether I should suggest it and possibly volunteer...

  • I did this for a while at my last job. All I can say is that it can be really frustrating (depending on your workplace), so if you volunteer you need to be prepared for people to complain about everything that even slightly inconveniences them, and ignore even the most simple request - e.g. sorting recycling. It's quite shocking sometimes how inconsiderate and lazy 'normal' people can be.

That said, if there are enough mindful people in your office to create a critical mass, where that kind of behaviour feels unacceptable, it could be easier (and obviously rewarding) - really depends on the atmosphere of the office. There are a lot of quick wins that can make a big difference overall, sometimes you just need someone to point it out and make it a habit (recycling, switching things off, printing double sided, etcetcetc)
