You probably want to go Finchingfield Clare Bury St Edmunds. Should all be nice.

Anyone know what the situation is for taking bikes on trains from cambridge to london is like?

Avoid the morning/evening peak, otherwise fine. You'll find quite a few other bikes on the trains. Check out advance tickets to/from Liverpool Street as they're much cheaper than Kings Cross.

Is that the great escape?

No but some bits probably are. This route is a non mandatory DIY by GPS AUK 200.

anyone got a good off-road (pref. riverside) route ldn-> southend/foulness route?

@youramericanlover this one is same distance as @andyp route but adds 400m with some mad "looping back on yourself" bits. Still on my "to do" list unsurprisingly.
