  • Changed the gearing to 39x16, stuck an 80 mm stem on, bargain bin job, with some grips & wide nukeproof bars out of my box.
    Had a bargain nc17 headset whacked in the other day, it's so nice to have a smooth headset.
    Thing rips now, I was as fast as my 24 spd racer on it on today's ride.

    gonna ride as is for a bit but probably needs wider bars, longer seatpost, fatter tyres...

  • Orlowski fork arrived for the DSC. Jacek did a great job on colour matching the fork fade I reckon!

  • Thanks. It´s a sugino rudd that was fitted to the bike. I've sprayed the cranks black and used the middle ring. Yes sq taper bb.

  • This frame is pretty special for me. Got given to me eight years ago by someone at my old club and I raced it at track league - won some races in the 'B's and got second overall in final standings, which bumped me up to 3rd cat. Later, it was the bike I used to pootle around with when dating my then girlfriend, now fiancee

    It's a Carlton Road/Path frame, and BB number dates it to 1959. It had a horrible paint job by a now defunct bike shop sometime in it's life before it came into my possession. Going to start racing track league again this year, and it's time to give it some love.

    List of stuff to do :-

    1. New paint. Under it's crap current paint and on the part of the fork hidden in the head tube you can see the original royal blue. Will probably go for this colour and get some Carlton decals put on. Will keep chrome as is

    2. At the same time as being re-painted possibly widen the spacing. It's 95mm front, 110mm back. A 100mm fits in the front ok, but 120mm spaced rears are a bit of a struggle.

    3. New wheels. Currently Chater Lea/Fiamme front, Maillard/Mavic rear which roll fine currently, but aren't going to last forever. If keeping spacing as is, will get 110mm Dura Ace / Soyou from NJS Export or similar. Otherwise more choices for wheels if I get the spacing out to 120mm

    4. New chainring and/or cranks. Cranks currently Sugino RD2, which are fine, but the chainring isn't the roundest in the world.

    5. Misc stuff. Dual pivot brake instead of the single pivot Weinmann. Easily on/offable brake lever to replace the Dura Ace 7400. New seat post if I can work out the diameter (27.2 ?) current one was bodged in by the previous owner with a shim. Veloflex tubs to replace the current Conti Sprinters. A pump to put in between the pump pegs, just 'cos.

    Any suggestions ? Especially regarding to re-space or not to re-space

  • To be fair he bought it from James that did the exact same thing he did. But yeah, natural selection usage for sure.

  • How a bike feels and rides has nothing to do with the distance from wheel to down tube. And defining fork/frame geometry based on looks to me does not make sense to me.
    Obviously I do not know whether this is the case here or not, hence my question.

  • This forum, as you may know is obsessed with rizzla clearances. Form over function sometimes for sure but slack angles just don't look right on a track bike. I can see your point though regarding the feel of a bike but I'll add in in what way the bike will be utilized as is important to check. My Roberts (later B'jammins') looked slack in the front but that frame build made it super composed in low speeds and went like a freighttrain when giving it the beans even when you did roadbike like cornering. It wasn't quick and nimble street machine weaving in and out. Roberts was a great bike and it didn't have rizzla. I'm not sure if robinmarine wanted steady. I'm guessing fast and nimble.

  • I know.
    But that has nothing to with trail and handling. Obviously tight clearances are desirable and also obtainable on a track bike, but that is just the image of a fast bike, not actual speed or nimbleness

    I should add that I think the bike looks great. Would ride etc.

    I should have been more specific. I wanted a max fork based on looks (guilty) and the fact I wanted to run a brake so was replacing OG fork anyhow.

    I was planning to be able to ride some comfortable distances as I live in Devon, which isn't much of an urban jungle. Orlowski suggested that increased rake would make it less twitchy for that kind of riding.

    I am however, as it happens, a complete tart and so part of me misses the 'Rizla' clearances from an aesthetic point of view.

    So short answer is kind of...both
