Koga Miyata Full Pro C, a nice steel roadbike

Posted on
  • Finally a new project, wanting a nice steel frame for a long time and then this popped up on a local site:

Koga Full Pro C, a nice steel frame with carbon forks (if anyone can tell more about it, yes please).

At first I wanted to do some small changes but then a full black Athena 11 spd groupset popped up at a really good price so I bought it. Will arrive this week.

Got me a Thomson stem and seatpost out of the partsbin and also found a classic flite which will suit it nicely.

Then from the money I get from selling the parts (full 5500 groupset, PM when interested) I'll buy myself some hubs and rims and start building a nice wheelset.

    It looks like this now:

    Specs will be:

    • Koga Miyata Full Pro C
    • Campagnolo Athena groupset (black)
    • Thomson seat and stem
    • 90's flite

Don't know about the wheels yet, any tips are welcome, thinking of relacing my Open CD's to some silver Ambrosio/novatec hubs.

Also the groupset comes with white hoods.. shall I go all white or all black?

  • Here is a phone pic of mine full pro oval (2003), which I finished recently. Originally it would have had alu fork, which was replaced with a carbon one.

I think afterwards it was called full pro c, so I guess yours could be 2004/2005. You can download all the catalogs from Koga's website. I think I read that all those top class Koga's were made to order, mine has a third bottle cage mount and a mount for a race number.

  • Yeah, yours is one of my inspirations. There aren't a lot of them being 'updated' to modern groups. Thanks for the tip, mine is probably 2004 then (2003 had a quil stem and in 2005 they didn't make the steel one anymore).

Mine also has a race number, but not that third bottle cage mount.

  • Checked again, it does have the extra bottle cage mount!

  • Nice, I like your build plan as well! Black kit and white hoods, tape and saddle are nice (dammits Klein is definitely a reference). I really like the ride, although the frame seems to be on the heavy side.

  • Update:

Just need to remove the cranks so I can instal the Athena cranks. And build some wheels.

  • Nice frameset, looks already way better now! Will this replace your pink roadbike?

  • No I don't know yet what I'll do with it, but wanted a steel bike for a long time so this wills stay for sure, probably ride it this vacation as I haven't ridden much this year and want to race again next year, which is where the pink one is for.

  • Got some Campagnolo Scirocco G3 wheels second hand for it, they were cheap and I needed some wheels with a campagnolo freehub.

Will do the job until I get some money to build a pair of nicer wheels.

  • Nice build Jan +1

  • Thanks Jon! It's up and running now:

Need black hoods and some nicer wheels.

  • Been riding this thing for some time now and it rides so nice that I decided to do some upgrades.

Bought a nice wheelset with Chorus hubs and Open Pro rims. Some nice black Challenge Paris Roubaix tyres (hope they fit as they're 27mm).

Took the CK headset of my fixie skidder as it doesn't get that much use.

Ordered some Columbus Max forks from Rychtarski, in this style:

Hopefully a picture update in the next week.

  • So forks are in. Colour is a little bit off but will do for a time. Will give it a @kenzo style respray at one point; frame, forks and stem in the same colour.

Also found some Zipp traditional bend bars.

    Bad phone pictures is bad..

  • I'm glad my bike is an inspiration, but please don't do it. It looks perfect right now.
And I really like that black front end with gold and blue.

  • I've just purchased a 1990 Koga Fullpro in Columbus Max, probably not going to be too dissimilar from yours in setup as I'm thinking of moving the Athena 11 Groupset from my Caad10 to it and replacing with SRAM Red for weenerism.

You can download the old Koga catalogues on their website if you want more info about that particular year-mine would have come with 8spd Chorus and had steel Max forks.

  • Well I'll think about the respray then. However I like the look of a mono-colour bike better than this shouty OTP stuf.

I did @ùbér_grùbér, mine appears to be from '04 or '05.
Would love to see some pictures of yours. This one is FM1 steel, which I believe is just some Max copy, Japan-style. Top tube has the same type of tapering as Max tubes I've seen.

  • way better with the classic bend drops, looks great with the black Campagnolo! Nearly all the old Koga catalogues are available to view online.

  • Great bike

  • I've not received it yet but here's a pic:

FM1 is supposed to be ver' nice-the Japanese know their steel! I had to sell my last Max frame because I was skint so looking forward to building up another-like you I'm thinking of a new paint job but with the logos removed the purple/blue fade isn't actually too bad.

Where'd you get your forks from if you don't mind me asking?

  • Thanks guys.

That's one beautiful Full Pro you got there! I do like that colorway better than mine. Imo the colors on mine are just cheap looking OTP colors applied to a nice steel frame that deserves better.

Forks are made by Orlowski. Cost me around 150 pounds.

  • Ooft. They're nice but that's pretty spendy, almost as much as I paid for my frame! Was asking as I want some for my Max OR tark machine but might have to go 1" straight crabon if it can't be done.

Colourway on mine is ok-I'd tolerate it if it was a bit less shabby but I just don't like blue bikes, I never have and don't know why so more keen to tart it up a bit.

I get what you mean with the colourway on yours-not very inspired if not offensive either. Might look good in black with a nice metallic flake through it for the ninja look else something pearlescent to contrast the black groupset?

Something like this 'dale would be pretty moody:

  • My FullPro Oval, with sram 10 speed bits and original alu forks... the only pic I could find, with the spare wheels I had back in the summer before getting the setup right and riding to Berlin.
