propensity to cycle

  • Here is a brief summary of how many cycle trips there would be if English people were as prepared to cycle as Dutch people.

  • Hmm, I wonder what the difference between the Netherlands and the UK is?

  • Dutch people are better humans than the British?

  • Don't think you can say that with Geert Wilders doing so well in the polls.

  • I've heard that all the polls took place in a carpark.

  • I would suspect there would be a huge difference between the number of people who say they would cycle but think we need cycle lanes to be safe so don't, and the number of people who actually would if we actually had such facilities.

The boost in figures with ebikes implies that even further. Why don't more people ride motorbikes?

Fact is with the rising cost of living in London we are all moving further and further away from our places of work which is going to have a much bigger impact on the take up of cycling than perceived safety.

  • The research says something different.

  • I don't understand the charts : /

  • What don't you understand. Vert Axis is number of local authority's, horizontal is number of trips. The red chart is the current state (well 2011) in England.

  • What don't you understand.

Hah - what they are trying to say.

So the combined value of all the bars in the chart should add up to the number of LAs , and the further the splodge of bars away from the vertical axis the better?

  • further the splodge of bars away from the vertical axis the better?

Yup. That indicates local authorities where more trips are cycled

  • OK. So what are they applying to the data in the 'scenarios' that shunts the distribution across?

  • The behaviour of Dutch people. IE the distances they are prepared to cycle and the terrain on which they are happy to cycle...

  • Cool. That's what I thought, although as concepts go, that's pretty abstract!

    Academics thread :)
