Velotoze - a more durable alternative?

Posted on
  • Used my Velotoze for the first time today, they're great, they do exactly what they say on the tin. Only issue is after only one ride there's already little holes around the front, which doesn't bother me, but I'm guessing that means they aren't going to last too long?

Anyone got an alternative that does basically the same thing i.e. keeps wind and water off but is a bit more durable? I was looking at the "Madison RoadRace PU Lycra Aero Overshoes" not sure they'd be any more durable than velotoze though; http://www.madison.co.uk/products/cycling/clothing-eyewear/overshoes/roadrace-pu-lycra-aero-overshoes-black-large/

Any ideas? or just use the velotoze until they fall apart and then buy another pair?

  • I think if you want something more durable you'll need to look for something in a ticker material and with a zip on the back. Something like this?

The Velotoze are great but in my opinion they're more of a race day item.

  • I have pearl izumi overshoes. They are shiny and stretchy and have been more durable than Rapha pro team ones.

  • I'd entertain the idea if they did as good a job as the velotoze and I knew they'd last a number of years but most of the reviews seem to suggest that most of these lightweight type overshoes aren't built to last. Seems they're more or less a 'replace each season' type garment, if that's the case I'd probably take my chances with the velotoze.

  • Good to know, I'll take a look.

  • I got so sick of taking Velotoze off (and putting them on) that I was glad to cut them off at the end of last winter.

  • To be honest, I don't know what all the fuss is about. I don't find them tricky at all - on or off - they're so stretchy, as long as you follow the instructions re: velotoze on before shoe method they go on relatively easy. I think the trickiest thing is not damaging them in the process, I'll admit they take more time than neoprene ones, but I can deal with that. Maybe I should just be more careful and try and get some more mileage out of them. I'll see how the current ones go and assess the situation I guess.

  • I haven't tried them, but Prendas do these:

They also do oversocks which I have tried and they're great for days when overshoes are too much- although they have negligible aero qualities if you're after marginal gains. Two pairs for £15 on the multi saver deal means you don't have to worry about wear and tear.

  • It's mainly weatherproofing that I used them for, the aeroz is a bonus really - hence why I like the velotoze so much, it's a complete barrier.

  • Just resurrecting this. I want some overshoes to keep my feet dry in summer when it pisses it down. I've got some decent ones but they let water in at the top. Anything other than Velotoze fit the bill?

  • I have velotoze MTB version. They're more reinforced than the normal velotoze, if you can find any.

  • Work okay with road shoes though?

  • Yeah it's no problem.
