Shattered rear dropout/ chainstay

  • Uh, just discovered this on the missus' bicycle while cleaning up. I'd been wondering why the frame would creak whenever the going would require to press a bit harder.

Now, the question is: is it safe to ride like this?

Or should I just get a new frame...?
    Cheers

  • fix it if its a decent frame or get a new one if it isn't/you can't do yourself.

you shouldn't continue riding it like this though, it won't get any better

  • Definitely not, lots of replacement frames around, just transfer all the parts over.

  • That'll buff out

  • How are your metalwork skills. I would put a strap across and pin it.

  • Sod this, we're getting a new frame and will move over all the other parts. Can't cycle a risky frame with all these potholes.

Hat tip to the Hackney Peddler folks for being so pro and helpful!

  • Hope they didn't sell you it in the first place?

I've not heard amazing things of them tbh.

  • @Skülly You haven't?

I'm considering buying a frame there and having a whole bike done at the moment, so I'd be keen to hear.

  • Buy a frame off eBay or on here and swap the parts yourself. Won't take long to do

  • Well, at least it sounds like that frame wasn't from them. Just have noticed some fairly high prices for worn-out stuff being offered that seems a tiny bit sharp of them. I've no first-hand experience so I'd better wind my neck in a bit.

  • I'm sure a frame builder would be happy to fix that for you. Thinking of http://www.stayercycles.com (send them a mail, Sam is usually quick to answer) but there must be others.

Alternatively, set up the bike for your/my height and we smash it in some quiet/grassy area until it cracks properly?
