I thought long and hard about the Vero - it looks good and would allow you to play local content (from a NAS) if that's important to you. I couldn't work out if a Roku would do that natively (ie without a DLNA server).
Edit: this plugin has been recently updated so I'll give that a go - maybe they fixed it.

Pretty sure it doesn't, you need something like Plex to serve media to the roku.
Unless you have particular requirements I find the raspberry pi fine.
Saying that, the pi does struggle with the Plex addons to kodi so I'll soon be retiring mine.
Amazon fire TV could be an option. Can side load kodi and the rest is dealt with by apps.
