I remember visiting Robin Mather on my fixed wheel bike. Gay Lane was pretty taxing, quite a few inhospitable climbs round there.

Easy enough to get a 34t for the Alps.

52/36 x 11-28 should be fine anywhere unless you are doing 6000m + in a day or something
-
• #106
If you @MechaMorgan 's size* and can't get up a col on on 36x28 then you might as well get off and walk.
*Based on the size of his frames.

to be fair my Cannondale is a bit like that

50/34 - 12/32 motherfucker
Pretty much.

I mean... that's what I needed to do a Cent Cols. But yeah, don't think you'd need that unless living in a mountain range...

Now we're getting in to the weeds...
What's a decent carbon steerer headset compression assembly (or whatever it's called). I like my Cannondale one. Where for to buy another?
Just need that, tyres and pedals and we're done for now.

I think the Cannondale one is rebranded FSA - which are available from the usual suspects.

You mean like this?

WTF is that?
He needs one of these.

WTF is that?
Sits like a spacer under the stem. Turning the nut increases the height of the spacer, increasing the headset preload.
Could be used as an alternative to a bung...if fork producers didn't tell you to fit a bung as a brace anyway.

ahh now I get what he ment by compression assembly.. what I posted was an alternative to a compression plug. but I use this for all my bikes, light and works perfect:
(it's an extralite ultrastar 3) -

I've had one of those Extralite ones before and didn't like it much. I prefer the two-part style ones. Might pop to Condor and get one.

Wheels released, £40 give or take so not bad. About £400 in total.

almost ready within 5 pages .. are you sure you know what you are doing!?
-
• #120
A bike thread should at least take 30 pages till the bottle cage discussion begins
-
• #121
I actually can't decide on that. Usually I would say Elite, but on a steel frame something like King Cages seems more apt?

I take your point, but to be honest, I'm going to be riding in England 98% of the time (and that's optimistic). No point speccing a bike up for alpine climbs when I am probably going to be fucking about in Kent.
I have decided; 52/36 x 11-28 will be sufficient for my needs.
