London Cycle Instructors - Have your say and make your voice heard!
On Tuesday, 31st January 2017, a group of London Cycle Instructors met with the General Secretary and Vice-President of the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB). The meeting was called in direct response to individual and collective issues experienced by Instructors around pay and working conditions, fair access to work, and much more. The aim of the meeting was to explore setting up a union branch with the purpose of campaigning on such issues, and to ensure that our voice is heard and fairly represented within the cycle training industry. A copy of the meeting minutes are attached, a summary from the IWGB, and an example branch constitution can be provided upon request.
The meeting was extremely informative and lively debate has since been ongoing about how to progress. The IWGB have won considerable gains in pay and job security for cycle couriers and cleaning staff amongst others - largely by campaigning for 'worker status' (see meeting minutes). However, whether worker status would work for cycle instructors, or is something cycle instructors would want, divided opinion.
Taking the above into consideration, it is clear that the views and opinions of the wider Instructor community are critical before progressing with any plans. Therefore, a further meeting will be held to discuss in detail:
