You've got to remember that modern drive trains are designed so that they can be used at the extremes and sill be functional. So using big and big or small and small isn't any thing out of the ordinary. Remember that theres no front mech for your chain to rub.
In other news ....
I took my cross bike on my club run and went out with the fast group, its got a 40t oval chain ring up front and a 12-32 on the back, and the only point I felt like I was lacking was on a long descent, 120rpm isn't my desired cadence, but I managed to hold the wheel of the fastest guy in the group.
What's the chainline like on these 1x conversions? Do the aftermarket narrow-wide rings have some sort of offset to give a narrower chainline when used in the outer position of a double crankset?
I'm thinking about going 1x on my winter bike but it's 130 OLN so the ideal chainline would be 43.5mm (I think?), only I'm not sure what combination of crank and ring brands would work. Most manufacturers seem to deliberately avoid mentioning chainline at all.
