I have oval ring on my niner mtb. With nw tooth profile (I have nw cog also) the chain doesnt drop anywhere. There is slight change in chain tension but you cant notice it when riding as either (i) the upper side of the chain is (in theory) in constant tension when spinning from saddle, or (ii) when hammering up a hill the chain is in its tightest phase when you put the power down.
