Isn't the case that, at the basest level, VDP is physically stronger than Van Aert? In terms of mental strength, it's reversed.

VDP has come out on top on 18 of their 26 meetings this season. I think most would agree he's been the stronger rider this season, but yeah, when it's not going his way he tends to go backwards pretty quickly.

VA is more dashing. That's all I know.

Was going to write this. In the champs race VA didn't quit.

VDP often halts his effort as soon as he feels he has an off day, whereas VA usually soldiers on. But judging by all races they dueled in after VDP's disappointment at the Worlds, I'd say his mental strength is now 100%.

VA has more watts, VDP is the superior technician.
