  • Clive, your trolling game has weakened, are you going soft in your old age?

  • No trolling.

SAF went on a high but in good time, There was something wrong at ManU which has not been put right yet. He managed one last league win and retired. No one has yest succeeded there although Mourinho could do something next year if he is given money to spend. SAF's legacy is safe.

Wenger is the only other manager at that type of level who can compare with SAF as a one club manager over decades. Dave Sexton was Chelsea manager for 7 years in the 60s and 70s. No one since him has lasted more than 4 years. Most other clubs are the same. Even hugely successful clubs in Spain, Italy and Germany, switch managers every 2-4 years. Wenger and SAF were unique and will not be repeated.

People used to criticise Chelsea for not having a manager of such longevity. With hindsight, I doubt that Chelsea would have won what they have won with just one manager.

Probably the time for Wenger to go was after the Invincible season. But he didn't and Arsenal have suffered as a consequence. Mind you, he steered them through the stadium move and kept their cashflow up which is what he was charged to do. They should honour what he has done rather than sacking him.
